Speaker 3:Today I'm reading a review because this review touched me. It was what I needed. When I opened it, I happened to look on Apple Podcasts to see, oh, has there been any reviews lately? And I don't check it all the time but this one had come up and maybe that's why I was searching for it, to like to see if there had been any reviews. So I was just kind of having a down day I don't know what it was and I read this review and it made me so happy, so I want to thank you, llemon55.
Speaker 3:Llemon55, thank you so much for taking time to write this. I'm going to read the review really quick. It says In my top 3, and I'm an avid podcast listener as one of those people that has subscribed to 30-plus podcasts that's me too, by the way I have to say Kimberly's is one of my favorites that I never miss an episode. Her energy is infectious on every episode. I take something, if not many things, away from each one. Thank you, thank you, kimberly, for what you do here. This means so much to me.
Speaker 3:I know when y'all are listening to these, you may not think that much of it, but I guarantee, when you're a business owner, whether you have a podcast, a YouTube channel, you get a product review, a Google review.
Speaker 3:When you get a positive review, it is the best feeling in the world. And what's even better is when you're having just kind of a down day and you read something like that. It totally lifts your spirits and it gets you moving. So, llemon55, thank you so much for writing this, and if you have been listening to this podcast and you find a value maybe you have 50 plus podcasts that you listen to, but you listen to this one regularly and you find value in it would you be so kind to write a written review? Y'all, it means the world to me, it really does, and it tells other people that this podcast is valuable. So all you have to do, like if you're an Apple podcast, is hit the five-star rating, then take 30 seconds to write what this podcast means to you, maybe how it's helped you, anything, anything you want to say. It means the world to me, so thank you so much. Okay, on to the episode.
Speaker 2:Well, hello friends, how are you doing?
Speaker 3:I'm so excited about your visits and I'm excited about your podcast too, because many of you are starting podcasts and I think it's amazing. Well, podcasting is not going anywhere, as you can see, because you're listening to one here and I listen to podcasts too it's not going anywhere and it's such a great way to connect with your people. So, anyways, just had to put that little plug in for those of you that have been thinking about starting a podcast. It's not going anywhere and I just wanted to also congratulate my clients that have gotten moving with theirs. It's very, very exciting. Today we're talking about the coolest concept y'all. I am just like blown away. I can't stop thinking about it.
Speaker 3:I actually watched a podcast I guess it was on YouTube with Benjamin Hardy, who is an author, okay, and I saw it yesterday morning. I've got several of his books Willpower Doesn't Work, he has. Benjamin Hardy is an author and a psychologist. He's got his PhD and he has really interesting books and a lot of it is psychological. But now it's like a lot of it is geared toward entrepreneurship, which I think is really cool. Willpower Doesn't Work is my favorite book of his. He's got a new book out, but anyways, he was on a podcast online. I think it was with Graham Cochran, and I was listening to him and I was like this is huge. This is huge. This is a huge concept. Like everything clicked when I listened because a lot of it is what I've been teaching y'all, but I haven't put it into these words and you know, authors are writers and they're good with words and Benjamin is amazing. He takes a lot of knowledge from other authors and people of the past. He's constantly quoting people. So I don't know that he actually came up with this concept, but he has his book out now. It's called the Science of Scaling, which I just downloaded. I haven't even started listening to it yet, but I'm going to. But I just I was like I have to talk to my people, I'm recording a podcast anyways, and I sat down and said I'm just going to talk about it Because this concept y'all is huge.
Speaker 3:So you probably read the title about 10x being easier than 2x, okay, and I know we all sit there and go. Is this like spammy headlines, like what is this? This is? This is so stupid. You know, it's like lose 10 pounds in a week, like although now with GLP-1s, I think people can actually do that. That used to be a joke, but anyways, I digress, anyways, I digress. I'm just saying Y'all this is huge.
Speaker 3:So hear me out on this episode. I want you to pay attention. I don't know what you're doing right now. Are you cleaning the house? Are you like talking to your children halfway while you're listening? Or maybe you're driving and screaming at your kids in the back while you're driving? I don't know. I need you to pay attention. I really do. It's that important.
Speaker 3:My episodes are fun and a lot of times lighthearted. They are serious strategic topics, but this one, y'all if you can get this and if I can put it into the right words because here I am taking concepts that have been out in the world and I am trying to whittle them down and really tailor them to small business owners like you and, most importantly, new business owners. A lot of you are fairly new, like you're either starting your business now or you've been in business a couple years. You may not think of yourself as new, but that is newer in the in terms of you know, like I've had my businesses for 25 years now, so I wouldn't call myself new, but I think y'all, in the early stage, you're newer and you're trying to figure things out with your business. I think a lot of you have goals for your business, so I want you to think about it right now. Let's kind of kick this off. I want you to think about what your goals are for your business.
Speaker 3:If I asked you if we sat down, had some coffee, we sat down and I said tell me what is your, what are your goals, what do you want? What would you tell me? Would you spout out a money goal right away? A lot of you do. Would you spout out that you just want a career that's actually fulfilling? A lot of you spout that out.
Speaker 3:A lot of you say you want a you know, a business that's a good creative outlet. You want to actually make money. Some of you have certain money goals in mind, like I need to replace my part-time income. I need to replace my full-time income. I'd love to go full-time with this. Some of you actually say my goal is to have just a part-time business and make X amount or do whatever. Some of you say my goal is to impact lives and to make some money, and I realized that many of you, or all of you, are in various stages of life. So let me just go ahead and preface this, okay. So, as you're thinking about your goals, a lot of people do they get weird because they think their goal has to be to build like a bazillion dollar business, like that's what people think, that I expect you to say and I do not expect you to say that. So stop thinking that and actually be honest with yourself.
Speaker 3:When I started my first business, my goal literally my goal was $500 a month profit, like I was like, if I can get $500 a month, I can shop now. And this was when I had little kids and I'm like, oh my gosh, I don't have to ask my husband Not that I have to ask his permission, but you know what I'm saying. When you're fairly new married and then you soon have kids, you're watching your money, right, you're watching your money, and so we were always watching our money, and so we didn't want to just spend it on rando things. But if I had an extra $500 a month, we could go on vacation. It could be anything. Right, right, right.
Speaker 3:So I want to just start this off that there is no judgment here and that you are never to say I need to make, I want a $500K business If that is not what you want, can? Can we just be really honest, y'all? There is no shame in saying I am in a stage of my life, which is me right now. I'm in my 50s. I have clients that are in their 50s. We are in a stage of life no one judged this. We are in a stage of life where we don't have to worry about every penny and that we have saved during our lives so that we could be starting to get really comfortable now. So it worked, our discipline worked, and so now we still want to have a business, we still want to have a career, but we don't have to have all these lofty income goals. Some of us don't. Please do not judge, because we all hope that we can be smart enough to actually get here to this point where we don't have to be, you know, penny-pinching in our 50s.
Speaker 3:Now some of you may have to be. Maybe you're a single parent. You had a spouse that passed away. You are taking on, you know adopting kids. Maybe you are taking care of elderly parents that are living with you and you do have to watch everything you spend and this business has to make money. I'm with you. I'm right there with you. My business has had to make money too.
Speaker 3:My point is let's not judge anyone else and don't judge yourself for whatever you say to me back when I say what are your goals? Maybe you have many goals. Maybe you don't really have much many goals. It's more about impact. It's about making a difference. It's about having a creative outlet, a career, something that you've been wanting to do, how you've been wanting to help people.
Speaker 3:Okay, so we get that. Everyone's got goals. So be honest. Be honest Is your goal to have a job that you could work one hour a day and still make a decent amount of money per week? I mean, you can say that, you can say part-time, I don't mind working four or five hours a day, I just want it to be making money. It doesn't matter Y'all. There's no wrong answer. There's absolutely no wrong answer. So I know I'm belaboring this point, but I want you to be honest and to get all the fluff from YouTube and Instagram and a bazillion dollar business I'm making this right out of your head. What are your actual goals?
Speaker 3:Okay, so let's think about that. What are your actual goals? And then let's let's look at your goals. Okay, whatever your goals are for impact, income, whatever it is right. Then let's look at what are your pursuits right now in your business. Okay, what are your like initiatives? What are the things that you're working on?
Speaker 3:Okay, here's what some of my clients tell me, and you may fall into this too. I am just trying to get my business up. I'm trying to build an Instagram. I want to build a TikTok channel. I want or is it channel TikTok account. I don't even know what you call it. I'm not on TikTok anymore. Okay, I want to build a YouTube channel. I want to be a really good podcaster. I want to have a store. I want to be public speaking, I want to have group programs, I want to have retreats, like. So you're working on sort of those things.
Speaker 3:Now, don't get this mixed up with goals, because maybe your goal before was like I want to make this much money, I want to have this and I want to have a retreat, and that's my goal. I want to have a store, right, this is saying what are you pursuing right now? What are all the things that you're pursuing right now? And if I was sitting across from you, what would you say? And if you're listening and you're sitting at a desk, you can write them out. Write out your goals, write out what your current pursuits are, what do you currently have your hands in that comes to your business? So when I listened to this podcast, so just kind of put that there, sit it there or maybe pause this if you need to write those out.
Speaker 3:When I'm listening to this podcast, benjamin Hardy was talking about 10x is easier than 2x, like what this is like gaslighting all of us, right? And then let me see if I can pull up the quote. Bear with me here just a second, okay. So Benjamin actually is quoting Robert Brault, who is a writer, he's an author, and and here's the quote, I think this is absolutely genius and I want you to just let this we are kept from meeting our big goals not by the obstacles, but by the clear path to the lesser goal. Okay, I'm going to say this again. And I had to like rewind and listen and rewind, and I just sat there in silence. And I had to like rewind and listen and rewind, and I just sat there in silence.
Speaker 3:We are kept from our goal not by obstacles, but by the clear path to the lesser goal. Okay, just let that sink in. It's kind of like we're missing the forest for the trees. We are pursuing all these little things which actually cause us not to reach our bigger goals. And you know there's been all that talk about shiny object syndrome and things that we all do. We're like squirrels and we're chasing the next thing. But in your business, if you want to actually become that person that has reached that goal, if you want to reach that goal or those goals that you had that you just listed out a minute ago, you're going to have to look at your current pursuits and take a major assessment and realize that you may see clear paths to all the things that you're pursuing like the little things that you're pursuing on a daily basis, weekly basis, monthly basis. But you have to ask yourself there's a clear path to all these little things, but that may be the exact thing that's holding you back from the bigger goal. And that is why Benjamin Hardy had written a book 10X is easier than 2X Okay, so that's where I got that from. He had written a book 10X is easier than 2X and he has a new book out right now. Okay, that just got released the Science of Scaling. Okay, so I think it's a summary of the 10X, so I just again, I just downloaded the Science of Scaling and I'm going to listen to it coming up here, hopefully this weekend when I go on my walks.
Speaker 3:But this concept that the little easy things that we're doing, that we can see the little clear path to, may be just what is holding us back from actually reaching our goals faster and in a bigger way and actually building that big, audacious dream of our business. And you have to think about, like as I'm doing, these things. Are these actually important? So what I would suggest you do is look at those pursuits and rate the ones that are actually getting you towards your goal right now. Like, is this actually getting you towards your goal right now? Like, is this actually getting you towards your goal? And this is what Benjamin had suggested that we do. We look at this list. We try to figure out the top 10% of things that are actually moving the needle, the top 10%. So then there's a bottom 90%. The bottom 90% is going to have to get sacrificed and we should only be focusing on that top 10% of things that are actually getting us toward the goal, the big goal. So you've got to actually be smart about the goal that you make, and you've got to be realistic, because then what you do is if you filter out all these other pursuits and you focus on what's actually going to move the needle and get you to that goal faster, then you can non-emotionally just get rid of the bottom 90% and focus on the 10%. And that's where you work from. You work from the future, the future of you, the future of your business, where you want it to go, where are we headed? That's what we're doing. So think about it right now.
Speaker 3:In your business you may have a lot of pursuits. Some of you may just be that you're doing a lot of things. Maybe you're just wearing all the hats, maybe you don't have that many pursuits, but you are actually doing all the things. But it's taking away time, it's making this process take a lot longer. That's when I usually recommend hiring out, getting help for things. But today I just want you to get the concept, the concept that actually going big, 10x-ing your business, is easier. It's easier than just kind of 2x-ing your business, because 2x-ing there's all these little goals that you're trying to get to. But to really go big you have to be discerning about every single thing you're doing. Is this actually getting to my goal?
Speaker 3:For me, my goal with my business right now this is different than the past is to have a lot of freedom and a lot of free time and work in a very streamlined, intentional way with clients that I'm coaching, workshops that I'm offering, that. It's super streamlined and I have a lot of freedom in my life. That's what I want right now. Back in the day, when I had my online boutiques, it was like I do want to work. I've got kids at home. Everything's crazy. I love it and they go to school part-time and I want to have this outlet. I want to build this business because I don't want to have to go back to work right now. I want this to be my work, and so my optimization at that time was for money and ease of being home with my children. Okay, now it's totally different. I've got a 16-year-old that's driving. We are in a different financial situation because we were disciplined all throughout life. You know our married life and luckily, nothing bad has happened where you know no disasters that caused us to lose money at this point right. So I have a different goal right now.
Speaker 3:My optimization is for the least amount of work, for the biggest bang for my buck, right of what I can do to help people. That's the honest truth of what I'm doing right now in my business. So you have to think about that. What are you optimizing for in terms of your goal? Your goal has to actually be an optimization. If you are saying I want freedom, like I said, like that's my number one thing right now is like my goal is optimizing for freedom and to be able to travel and do things.
Speaker 3:If I decided to start three more group programs and commit to doing something once a week with you know, speaking at an event and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, I would take all my time and this would not be getting me to my goal. It wouldn't. It would not be optimizing for that. It would be optimizing for something else. I hope you're sitting here with this for a minute that your goal is not only money or impact. You know the creative outlet it's optimizing for.
Speaker 3:What in your life Is it optimizing so that you only have to work half days in it? That you could just work the weekends? That you're optimizing for money, that you have to be making a certain amount of income. That's fine, whatever it is, but let's be honest about it, because that is going to direct the 10% that you work on every day. And I totally think this is analogous to life In everything that you're choosing personally.
Speaker 3:If you're starting a family, you have to be thinking, hey, what is my goal for this family? That my kids grow up, let's say, in a Christian home. They are close to their family, that they value family time, that they want to live here, that they want to come back and see us, that they you know, etc. Etc. Etc. So everything you should be doing with your family should be moving toward that goal. Right, I want them to have healthy habits now, so that when they're adults, they have that. Okay, what are you doing now to instill healthy habits? That's just an example, but you can use this in life. Right now.
Speaker 3:You can say what are my goals for my life in like 10 years? What am I going to be optimizing for in order to make that goal? I want you to be thinking about this y'all. It actually is easier to 10x what you're doing because you have focus. You have focus with the end in mind, eye on the price. You're going toward that one thing, and when I say one thing, it's just like your overall vision for your business. So everyone today, I think this is huge. I'm not going to go into more detail on it I may do another episode next week, sort of, in relation to this but I want you to think about it.
Speaker 3:Are you looking at your business that way that realizing that the bigger goal may actually be easier than all the little things you're chasing and pursuing that are a clear path? The clear path to the lesser goal is actually getting in your way. It's getting in your way. You've got to set yourself up for success. Look at all your pursuits. Try to shave off 90%. If you can't, can you shave off 70% and focus on just what your big goal is, because that's the way to get there by reverse engineering this. Okay, does that make sense? I'm still trying to process all of this again.
Speaker 3:This is this is along the lines of what I've been teaching. Right, I always teach that you should have a business that fits into this season of your life, and I talk about that and being in alignment with you. I'm big about that, because your business won't work if it doesn't fit either of those 2 things. It won't be fun and it won't actually work for your life and you'll end up quitting, and I don't want that to happen, right? So this is along the lines, but it's just the overall concept. To me that just makes it more clear If I focus on that top 10% and stop chasing the lesser goals and really go for what's big, what do I need to be doing? That's what I need to be focused on, and I have to be willing to let go of those other pieces.
Speaker 3:I mean, he had given the example in the podcast episode that I heard about Steve Jobs, who did not care about cannibalizing or getting rid of part of his business. For example, the iPod was super successful with all the music, but when he started seeing the technology of the phones, he realized the iPod needs to go away because it's going to go on the phone and I don't care, even though it's been a complete success. Bye, bye, we're going to the iPhone. So that's innovation, right, and that's kind of what you have to do with your business, like, in what ways are you looking at it and are things that you're doing that you actually, you know, are happy about?
Speaker 3:You have fun, but you realize this isn't getting you to the future self. This isn't getting you to those goals. It may be fun and awesome and a cool thing, and just like if you're trying to collaborate with other business owners. You're trying to do things, but you realize, is this collaboration or is this show that I'm doing, or, you know, is me building a YouTube channel or an Instagram or whatever? Is this actually getting me toward my goal? And if it's not, even though you like it, you may need to let it go because you're chasing that next little thing instead of focusing on the bigger outcome.
Speaker 3:Okay, I'm going to let this sink in, I'm going to stop there. I want you all just to breathe in and I hope this is as impactful for you as it is for me. I hope you're not sitting there going. I already knew this. This is no big deal To me. It's huge. I've been thinking about it nonstop since I heard the episode yesterday. No-transcript. Let's eliminate what we can so that we're down to a very focused action plan for you so you can actually reach your goal in the near future. So reach out. We could do a quick call. I could kind of see where you're stuck. Let you know if I think I could help you or not in coaching, and then you'll have the choice to go from there.
Speaker 3:So, anyways, that's it. Y'all are amazing.
